Arina Mishina for Harper's Bazaar

How did your modeling career start?

My modeling career started with a trip to Shanghai. I wanted to go to China so much, so my model agent got me a contract there. I was so happy, cause I got the opportunity to work as a model and to learn Chinese at the same time.

What difficulties have you faced in model world?

Once I had an 8-hour photoshoot in freezing and windy conditions in NY while wearing a summer dress, so modeling can be very harsh.

What is your favorite thing about modeling?

The most precious thing I learned from modeling was that it taught me not to compare myself to other people.

I love the sense of freedom, and modeling gives it to me.

Give the definition of fashion.

Fashion, to me, is a form of expression without using words. When I wear something that makes me feel more creative, more powerful  — that’s when I feel the most alive, the most engaged with the world.

How important is it for you to follow trends? How would you describe your style?

I don’t follow any trends, and I have my own fashion identity. It’s a way better to wear what makes you happy,  makes you feel good about yourself.

I would describe it as quite girly but with an edge. I don’t like having items of clothing that everybody else has. I prefer to look for more unique clothes and accessories.

What are some items in your wardrobe that you can’t live without?

Generically, my favorite item of clothes is shoes. Nude high heels would probably be my number one thing I can’t live without.

Do you have any favorite designers?

I am solely in love with Zimmerman dresses. They are so sophisticated and feminine at the same time.

Has shopping become a routine for you, or do you actually enjoy it?

I enjoy shopping! It’s one of the most relaxing things for me. It’s always fun to try on clothes, to see how they go together. I like to walk the floors of stores to get inspiration and experience the new trends.

Offer advice to our readers: How to avoid getting lost in the world of fashion, and instead create your own individual style

I reckon the most important is to forget about being “fashionable,” you shouldn’t become a slave to trends. You still can take inspiration from celebrities, but make it your own – make decisions about how it looks on you and not on another person.
